Marking another significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey towards a fully digital, transparent, and citizen-friendly public service, online traffic fine payments via GovPay was successfully launched recently in the North Western and North Central Provinces. With this rollout, five out of the nine provinces in the country have now enabled online traffic fine payments via GovPay.

The launch event was held under the patronage of W. P. J. Senadheera, DIG – Traffic and Road Safety Range; L. U. S. Sarathkumara, DIG – Kurunegala Range; Sumudu Rathnayake, Advisor to the Ministry of Digital Economy; Harsha Purasinghe, Chairman – Digital Task Force, Ministry of Transport; Janaka Sampath Geekiyanage, Director (Development), Ministry of Digital Economy; Chanuka Wattegama, Acting CEO of ICTA; Channa De Silva, CEO of LankaPay; and in the presence of senior Police officers representing all divisions of the two provinces.

With this latest expansion, motorists can now make online traffic spot-fine payments across both provinces conveniently and securely using any internet or mobile banking platform or FinTech application connected to GovPay.

The North Western Province deployment covers 74 police stations under the Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, Nikaweratiya, Puttalam, and Chilaw police divisions, while the North Central Province rollout enables digital fine payments across 59 police stations under the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kebithigollewa, and Thabuthegama police divisions.

Ahead of the official launch, comprehensive training and awareness programmes were conducted in Chilaw and Anuradhapura, covering Traffic Police Officers from the Puttalam, Chilaw, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kebithigollewa, and Thabuthegama police divisions.

Since the introduction of online traffic fine payments via GovPay in April 2025, strong adoption has been observed, with 49,500 digital fine payments and over Rs. 63 million collected through GovPay. Currently, 14 online and mobile banking platforms and 7 FinTech applications support digital fine payments.

The expansion of the Online Traffic Fine Payment System reflects the Government’s strong commitment—led by the Ministry of Digital Economy—to modernizing and enhancing public service delivery, while accelerating the nation’s digital transformation agenda. This initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening technology-enabled governance, improving efficiency, and enhancing citizen convenience. With additional provinces scheduled for onboarding in the coming months, Sri Lanka is steadily advancing toward full island-wide digital adoption of traffic fine payments.
